About the artist:  Bill Henson

Born 1955, Melbourne
Lives Melbourne

Henson’s extraordinary photographs arrest moments of vulnerability; transitions moving across a human face, a cloudscape or landscape between childhood and adulthood, lightness and darkness, the city and its outskirts.

Bill Henson is one of Australia’s leading contemporary artists. He had his first solo exhibition at the age of 19 at the National Gallery of Victoria in 1975. Henson has since exhibited extensively in Australia and overseas, including New York, London, Paris, Beijing, Tokyo, Montreal, Barcelona, Vienna and Amsterdam.  In 1995 he represented Australia at the Venice Biennale with his celebrated series of cut-screen photographs that have been cut up and collaged with tape and pins. He holds an honorary doctorate from the University of NSW. In 2004, a major retrospective of his work,  Bill Henson: Three Decades of Photography was held at the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney and the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne. In 2006 he exhibited a major body of work in Twilight: Photography in the Magic Hour at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. Two major monographs; Mnemosyne (2005) and Lux et Nox (2002) have been published by Scalo.

Henson’s work is held in every major public collection in Australia as well as important museum collections worldwide, including the Bibliotheque Nationale de  Paris, the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Madrid, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, USA, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, USA, the Denver Art Museum, USA, the Houston Museum of Fine Art, USA, the Sammlung Volpinum, Vienna, Austria, the Museum Moderner Kunst (MUMOK), the Stifting Ludwig Wien, Vienna, Austria, The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, Canada, the Tate Collection, London and the Solomon R Guggenheim Museum, New York.
